BU December 2002 coverBluegrass Unlimited

In December 2002, I had the honor of being published again in Bluegrass Unlimited, one of the oldest and most respected publications in the bluegrass music world. My first story for BU, about South Carolina promoter Jennings Chestnut, appeared in the May 2001 issue. The December 2002 issue included my story on superguitarists Dan Crary and Beppe Gambetta and a roundup of "Desert Island" discs that various bluegrass professionals would most like to have with them if they were to become stranded on a tropical shoal. These articles are collected here now, including an unabridged version of the Desert Island disc article with dozens of photos that didn't make it into the print edition.

IS Magazine
In January 2001, I began writing for IS Magazine, O`ahu's hottest entertainment monthly. Soon, the publisher asked me to edit the monthly--quite a challenge, considering I lived in South Carolina at the time! Sadly, publication was suspended after the tragedies of September 11 forced Hawai`i's tourism-dependent economy to its knees. Here are a few of my articles and columns from past issues, which highlighted the musical, visual, performing and literary art scenes in Hawai`i nui.

Columns
  • Niele
This column about Hawai`i-connected musicians, artists and actors was one of the most popular in IS Magazine! Exclusive interviews with Robi Kahakalau, Pat Morita, Kimo Kahoano, Ledward Kaapana, and more!
  • Ki`ihele
An excursion through Paradise on the World Wide Web.

Table For Two (with Matt Campbell)

table 42 When we lived in South Carolina, my husband and I reviewed restaurants for The Sun News. Twice each month, we visited restaurants plain and fancy in northeastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina, seeking the very best elements in each place. We gained a few pounds, made some new friends, and had a splendid time!

Articles edited for Carol Rumpf

MomMy dear mother, Carol Rumpf, passed away unexpectedly and far too early on August 30, 2002. She was just 59 years old. You can find Mom's obituary here, and the eulogy I wrote about her is here.

She set a formidable example for me in so many ways: she was a loyal friend, a compassionate judge, a wonderful mother... and a gifted writer. I had the great pleasure of editing her articles for both bluegrass now and Bluegrass Unlimited, and I am honored to publish them here.

Mom was the best friend a bluegrass musician could ever have. Her joyful admiration of extraordinary talent is obvious in every word she wrote. She interviewed several of her dearest buddies for her stories, including John Moore and Lorraine Jordan. These gentle profiles are fine examples of her skill as a writer. Even more, they illustrate her deep love for that high lonesome sound.
