with banjo wiz Pete Wernick
at Arts At Marks Garage,
Tuesday, March 30
Sponsored by Bluegrass Hawai`i and Tim Bostock Productions, the event will take place at the Arts at Marks Garage in Honolulu on Wednesday, March 30, at 6:30 PM. Admission is $14 for workshop participants; register by calling 622-1077. Participants who register for the workshop at Wernick's March 28 show at Kapono's will be charged a discounted fee of $11. Non-musicians who simply want to listen will be charged an admission fee of $6.
The workshop at 7:00 will introduce the principles and etiquette to bluegrass musicians of all skill levels; the only experience required is the ability to make simple chord changes. Participants should bring their traditional bluegrass instruments: banjos, fiddles, guitars, mandolins, resophonic guitars, autoharps, dulcimers, and upright basses.
At 8:30, an exclusive group of O`ahu's best acoustic musicians will gather for a Master Jam led by Wernick, one of the banjo giants of the genre. Caroline Wright, event organizer and founder of Bluegrass Hawai`i, has invited some of O`ahu's most accomplished acoustic musicians to join Wernick. "Intense energy and incredible improvisation are components of the best bluegrass jam sessions, and that's the level of musicianship we'll hear."
Wernick, a founding member of bluegrass supergroup Hot Rize, has performed and recorded with virtuoso musicians like Chris Thile (Nickel Creek), Jerry Douglas (Alison Krauss + Union Station), and Peter Rowan (Old And In The Way). His best-selling instructional books, CDs and videos include Bluegrass Banjo, Bluegrass Songbook, and How to Make a Band Work. Tickets for Wernick's show with steel guitarist Ken Emerson at Kapono's this Sunday are available at 545-2820.
